Advertising controversy grips S. Korean mukbang YouTubers

Popular mukbang influencers, such as Boki, Tzuyang and Mbro, have millions of fans who subscribe to their channels. They easily rack up many more views with the mukbang videos they post every two to three days.
The recent controversy came as a YouTuber who uses the name Cham PD accused several popular YouTubers of not indicating promotional material. Cham PD claimed that he has collected evidence over the past two years.
Cham PD, who himself also uploads mukbang videos, later apologized for making blatant accusations, including those that were found to be groundless. He deleted the video, but the debate had already taken a toll on mukbang YouTubers.
Mukbang influencers, such as Boki, Mbro and Hamzy, posted statements apologizing for not indicating advertisements in some videos that were actually advertisements or for indicating them in small letters or in sections that were not easily noticeable.
Tzuyang, a mubkang influencer popular for her down-to-earth attitude, even announced that she will be leaving YouTube. She apologized for not indicating advertisements in some of her early videos but stressed that she has followed the rules and that she’s leaving the platform after becoming the target of hate comments.
While Tzuyang’s fans are mostly voicing regret towards the unexpected decision and thanking her for taking responsibility, other mukbang influencers have come under fire from fans who have voiced disappointment and anger.
“This is a person who has committed illegal activities. Cancel your subscription right now,” a viewer wrote on the channel “Eat with Boki,” which has nearly 4.6 million subscribers.
“So basically, what she did is a deception in an international scale,” another viewer wrote.
The problem of “deceiving” subscribers is not limited to mukbang YouTubers.
Last month, celebrity stylist Han Hye-yeon and Kang Min-kyung, a member of K-pop duo Davichi, had to apologize after they uploaded videos without indicating they were product placements.
Some angry fans turned their backs, saying they were fooled into believing the products promoted on their channels were genuinely recommended with goodwill.
In fact, a study by the Korea Consumer Agency conducted between October and November last year showed that of the 582 advertisements posted on the 60 most popular accounts, only 30 percent indicated they were promotional material.
Even those that indicated the posts were part of an advertisement did not clearly indicate their commercial purpose or displayed them in hard-to-recognize ways, according to the study.
As the controversy continued, the country’s fair trade watchdog announced plans to launch revised regulations and fine rule breakers to “prevent consumer losses from deceiving advertisements and protect their rights.”
Under the detailed measures set to go into effect on Sept. 1, influencers have to indicate advertisements in appropriate font sizes and colors that can easily be recognized. They also have to say that the advertisements were provided through sponsorship or through advertisement deals and use such terminology instead of vaguely mentioning they “experienced the product for a week” or that the post is of “informational content.”
Despite the backlash, however, social media personalities are expected to remain attractive marketing channels for companies.
“In some areas, influencers have bigger influence compared with celebrities. They also give the feel that they are actual users of the products instead of being paid to feature in an advertisement,” a digital marketer who has worked with influencers on cosmetics products told Yonhap News Agency, asking not to be named.
“On top of that, the cost is cheaper and it’s much easier to work with them. They know what will work and what won’t.”

Pete Mahovlich was the Detroit Red Wings’ first draft pick

General manager Steve Yzerman holds 10 picks in the 2020 draft, four of them in the first two rounds.
The NHL draft has changed over the years, expanding and contracting to where it is today as a seven-round, two-day event. At the first NHL draft, though, in 1963, there were only four rounds and teams could pass on a pick to a competitor. That’s the subject of this edition of Detroit Red Wings Revisited.
It was in the days of the Original Six, when what was then called the amateur draft was instituted to create a more equal opportunity for teams to acquire promising young players. Previously, NHL teams would sponsor amateur players, essentially buying their rights.
The Montreal Canadiens had the first pick, and chose Garry Monahan. The Wings were next and chose Pete Mahovlich, a 16-year-old forward (and the younger brother of Frank Mahovlich, a future Hockey Hall of Famer). When their turn came in Round 2, the Wings picked Bill Cosburn. He never played in the NHL – but then neither did any other player drafted in the second round.
It wasn’t exactly a strong draft class (remember, most young players had already been snapped up via sponsorships). The Wings didn’t even both making picks in the third and fourth rounds, deferring them to the next team. The order was Montreal-Detroit-Boston-New York-Chicago-Toronto. By the fourth round, only the Canadiens, Bruins, Rangers and Maple Leafs made selections. Of the 21 players selected, only five played in the NHL: Monahan, Mahovlich, Walt McKechnie, Jim McKenny and Gerry Meehan.
More Red Wings Revisited:
Wings were bummed when they drafted Steve Yzerman in 1983
Picking fourth yielded best – and worst – pick in franchise history
Two Detroit Red Wings from 1989 draft made history with these NHL awards
The Leafs made the best picks. Their first-round choice, McKechnie, played 955 games in the NHL (321 of them with the Wings). Toronto’s third-round pick, McKenny, went on to log 604 games in the league. Their fourth-round pick, Meehan – the last player picked – played 670 games.
Mahovlich made his NHL debut Dec. 28, 1965, earning an assist in a game at Boston. He struggled to be a consistent threat offensively, and spent time with the Wings and in the minor leagues. During the 1967-68 season, Frank Mahovlich, already a four-time Stanley Cup champion with the Leafs, joined the Wings. Frank starred on a line with Gordie Howe and Alex Delvecchio, scoring a team-high and career-best 49 goals in 1968-69.

Pete had four points. He spent 34 games that season with the Fort Worth Wings, where he had 36 points.

It wasn’t until his 1969-70 move to the powerhouse Montreal Canadiens that Pete’s NHL career took flight. He regularly topped 30 goals a season, and topped 100 points in 1974-75 and ’75-76. Known for his deft puckhandling, “Little M,” as he was nicknamed (because his brother was “Big M,” – Pete was 6-foot-5, 220 pounds in his playing days), recorded 82 assists in 1974-75, when he played on a line with Guy Lafleur and Steve Shutt.
Mahovlich spent two seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins, from 1977-79, before another stint with the Wings. He recorded 16 goals in 1979-80, then finished his NHL career as he’d started it, splitting the 1980-81 season between the Wings and the minors. In 1982, the Wings bought out Mahovlich’s contract.
In a 16-year NHL career with the Wings, Canadiens and Penguins, Mahovlich produced 773 points in 884 games. He was the only one from the ’63 draft
to win a Stanley Cup, doing so four times with Montreal between 1971 and ’77.
Mahovlich segued to a new career as a color commentator for the Adirondack Red Wings, working alongside play-by-play man Dave Strader.

Daimler: On the road in the International Truck Of The Year 2020: a truck fan tells us all about his dream job

Dirk Stranz is very matter-of-fact when it comes to trucks. “We build the vehicles that transport goods – and they have to be able to do that both safely and efficiently,” says the test engineer from Mercedes-Benz Trucks as he walks down the staircase from his office in the Wörth development and testing centre into the foyer. “But the Actros Edition 1 in the ‘Truck Of The Year’ design is a truck which stands out from the crowd.” Dirk Stranz and his colleagues were part of the team that created the success story on four wheels in front of which he is now standing: lots of the innovations which are characteristic of today’s Mercedes-Benz Actros model series were tested by the test engineer before being launched on the market.
Stranz is now in the entrance hall of the development and testing centre which is located close to the Mercedes-Benz Wörth plant. Over the past year and a half, the centre has been expanded. In total, 70 million euros have been spent on the location.
“A truck which impresses its drivers”
When Stranz talks about his work, he quickly starts getting excited: “It’s a great job that we have here.” The top-of-the-range model parked in front of him revolutionised the logistics sector and was crowned International Truck of the Year 2020 by a team of specialist journalists from 24 European countries. Dirk Stranz is particularly familiar with the Mercedes-Benz Actros parked here in the foyer. He and one of his colleagues drove the silver-grey flagship to the awards ceremony in Lyon. “It’s a truck which truly impresses its drivers.” With his left forefinger, he touches the “Truck Of The Year 2020” logo which adorns the radiator grille of the Actros 1863 Edition 1. His smile reveals that he is a huge fan of the truck himself. Just 400 units of the Edition 1 model rolled off the production line in Wörth. “If I spot one of them while I’m driving on the motorway, I recognise it immediately. The main-beam headlamps in the sun visor or the stainless steel trim strips – even the smallest of details: I don’t miss a trick!”
Inside the vehicle, the truck also sets itself apart from the competition. But what are his favourite aspects of the Edition 1 model? Stranz, who is now sitting in the driver’s seat, smiles and passes his hand over the leather-clad dashboard. “It’s like being in an S-Class,” he says. “But there was one thing that was clear to us during the development and equipment of the truck: the Edition 1 isn’t just a looker, its primary task is fulfilling its duties diligently.”
Stranz knows several logistics firms which have the special model with the highest engine output in their fleet. “Within those companies, the trucks sometimes get used for special tasks. For example, if a transport task involves driving on the A7 via the hilly Kasseler Berge stretch with a fully-laden truck, then it would certainly be a good place to use all of the truck’s 460-kW output. After all, the Edition 1 trucks have to earn money just like any other truck.” Stranz knows that the special models often stay with a company for a long time. “I even know companies which collect the Edition models.” Irrespective of this, the truck doesn’t just impress its drivers, it also makes them proud to be behind the wheel. “The vehicle is a mobile business card for the company. And if a fleet manager assigns a driver to this truck, it’s a sign of respect and trust towards that driver.”
MirrorCam: one of more than 60 innovations in the Actros
At the time, Dirk Stranz wasn’t surprised that the Actros was elected International Truck Of The Year. “We were pretty sure the truck would be well-liked by the jury, but as to whether it would be sufficient to bring home the accolade, well you can never be so sure of that. In the end, with more than 60 innovations on-board, the new Actros did manage to win over the jury.” Among the innovations are Active Drive Assist, Active Brake Assist 5, the Multimedia Cockpit, the re-worked Predictive Powertrain Control and probably the most noticeable characteristic – the MirrorCam. This comes as standard in a number of markets and brings with it some interesting benefits: removal of the …

The White House’s plan to purge Chinese tech from the internet is just bluster — for now

The US has unveiled a vague but aggressive plan to purge Chinese tech companies from America’s internet, creating what the Trump administration has dubbed the “Clean Network” – the US internet as it currently stands, but minus a lot of Chinese tech.
It’s an expansion of the White House’s 5G Clean Path initiative, which was announced earlier this year with the aim of keeping Chinese hardware companies like Huawei and ZTE out of America’s 5G infrastructure. The Clean Network program takes that anti-Chinese impulse and applies it not only to 5G but also telecoms carriers, cloud services, undersea cables, apps, and app stores. It would mean no Chinese apps in US app stores, no US data stored on the Chinese cloud, and no US apps on Chinese smartphones.
Announcing the plan yesterday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said a major aim of the program was to keep American citizens safe from Chinese spies and censorship. In what would be a serious escalation of the administration’s current war against TikTok, Pompeo said that under the Clean Program, the US government would remove all “untrusted” Chinese apps like TikTok and WeChat from American app stores.
“With parent companies based in China, apps like TikTok and WeChat and others, are significant threats to personal data of American citizens, not to mention tools for Chinese Communist Party content censorship,” said Pompeo in the press briefing, reports CNBC.
But while the Clean Network program is grand in scope, it’s not clear how or if it can be enforced, especially with the Trump administration distracted by an election challenge in a few months’ time. Experts say the plan as it currently stands is rhetoric and bluster. There is no technical detail on how the administration might implement the aims it outlines, and there’s no reference to the legislative tools that would be needed to make these changes happen.
“The specifics don’t add up terribly well. They don’t speak to a good understanding of how networks function, or a very clear idea of how this is expected to be implemented,” Maria Farrell, an independent researcher in international tech policy, told The Verge. “That does make it seem like more of a rhetorical exercise.”
Although the plan has invited comparisons with China’s Great Firewall, Farrell says a better comparison might be with Russia’s approach to internet sovereignty. There, the government has been able to pass some laws in areas like data localization, mandating that data concerning Russian citizens is processed in Russia, but it doesn’t have the control or resources that China has to directly oversee and censor the web so extensively.
“Russia is mostly talk and no trousers,” says Farrell. “Compare that to America, which is a bit of talk and no trousers. They’ve got some of the rhetoric but nothing like the machinery you need, either technical or political or legal.”
If the Trump administration is determined to push ahead with the Clean Program, though, it could still be hugely disruptive to the global tech industry by leveraging the tools of international trade. It was able to ban Huawei from using Google’s software, for example, and could potentially apply those same rules to other Chinese smartphone makers. That could be hugely damaging to these firms, hampering their ability to sell devices in lucrative European markets, for example.
What might be harder to stomach for the White House, though, is the backlash it might receive if it bans not only TikTok but all Chinese-made apps from US app stores. On Twitter, games analyst Daniel Ahmad noted that some of the most popular mobile games in the US, titles like PUBG Mobile and Call of Duty: Mobile, are made by Chinese tech giant Tencent. Tencent also owns Finnish mobile studio Supercell, which makes the hugely popular Clash of Clans. Would that count as a Chinese app and therefore a vector for censorship and spying? The current Clean Network plan offers zero clues on questions like these.

The World’s Hottest Stock Is a Money-Losing Tech Giant Soaring 880%

If Sea Chief Executive Officer Forrest Li is paying attention to any of this, he’s not letting on. The 42-year-old billionaire said in a video interview that he’s been working seven-day weeks in the office since April, leading his company through what may be its most pivotal year. Demand for Sea’s mobile games and online-shopping platform has surged during the pandemic, and the company is bidding on a Singapore digital-banking license to accelerate its push into financial services. Li is also looking for potential acquisitions in gaming, logistics and e-commerce.
“We don’t like to think too much about our success or how we got here,” he said when asked about Sea’s stock price. “It doesn’t matter if the environment is good or bad. It doesn’t change a company or a person.”
Even by the standards of today’s tech boom, Li’s ascent has been remarkable. Born in the Chinese port city of Tianjin, he worked for the local units of Motorola Solutions Inc. and Corning Inc. before enrolling in Stanford’s MBA program. He founded Sea, then known as Garena, in 2009 and took it public with backing from Tencent in 2017.
Read more about Li, who named himself after Forrest Gump.
After a rocky first year of trading, Sea’s stock has gone on to trounce everything in its class. Initially, the gains were fueled by the runaway success of Sea’s first self-made mobile game — a battle royale called Free Fire that has attracted as many as 80 million daily active users in more than 130 markets.
Forrest Li
Photographer: Wei Leng Tay/Bloomberg
But Sea’s e-commerce and financial services units are now increasingly important pillars of the bull case. Its Shopee platform overtook Alibaba’s Lazada in the fourth quarter of 2019 to become the top e-commerce provider in Southeast Asia, according to research firm iPrice, and the business accounted for more than 40% of Sea’s revenue in 2019, up from 2.3% in 2017.
SeaMoney, which offers everything from e-wallets to micro loans, could ultimately be just as large, according to Li. “We think this is a huge business opportunity,” he said.

The soft-spoken founder has some big-name believers. Tencent still owns about 20% of Sea, and the stock was the biggest holding as of May in Noah Blackstein’s Dynamic Power Global Growth Class fund, one of the world’s top-performing equity mutual funds of the past decade. Other prominent shareholders include Chase Coleman’s Tiger Global Management LLC and Kora Management LP, an emerging markets-focused hedge fund in New York, according to regulatory filings as of March.
Kora began investing in Sea in early 2018 after meeting with Li, Daniel Jacobs, the hedge fund’s founding partner, said in an interview. “We’ve seen over the last two years a company that’s got a great team and great products going after a big market and just executing incredibly well,” he said. “We think this is a mini Tencent and has the ability to be a really successful, large company in a global context.”
Sea has already claimed the title of biggest company in Southeast Asia after its market value swelled to $65 billion, topping DBS Group Holdings Ltd. and PT Bank Central Asia for the first time earlier this year. Revenue has also grown quickly, jumping 163% to $2.2 billion in 2019, though it’s still just a fraction of DBS’s $11 billion.
As for Sea’s $1.46 billion net loss last year? Jacobs isn’t bothered by it. “They are thoughtful and prudent about building a business,” he said. “We are very much of the view thpany has all this under control.”
Not everyone is convinced.
DBS Bank Ltd. analyst Sachin Mittal downgraded his recommendation on Sea to sell in July, citing Indonesia’s new tax regulations for cross-border transactions and the likelihood of the company burning through cash to grow its payments business. “There is a tech bubble right now,” he said in an interview. “Sea’s stock is overvalued and it’s partly a reflection of the industry.”
While short sellers have closed out bets against Sea at a rapid clip in recent weeks, they still have a bearish position worth more than $3 billion, or about …

Michigan concert, fest producers submit reopening proposal to Whitmer

The coronavirus wiped out the summer concert season, and uncertainty has loomed beyond that.
But are Michigan’s Labor Day festivals and autumn events salvageable after all?
Some key players in the local events industry are increasingly optimistic it’s possible, following an intensive series of talks with state officials that began in late May.
On Monday, a group of more than 100 event promoters, festival producers, sports executives and venue operators submitted a package of proposed reopening guidelines to Michigan’s tourism agency. The committee, convened by Pure Michigan at Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s request, includes many Detroit heavyweights – Live Nation, the Red Wings, Pistons, Lions, Detroit Jazz Festival, Arts, Beats & Eats and others – along with representatives from fairs and performing arts centers across the state.
They’re hoping Whitmer will adopt their recommendations, compiled with direction from national health institutes and trade associations, to accelerate the return of certain mass gatherings – albeit at reduced capacities and with strict social-distancing rules.
“There’s a sign of hope here that events can come back sooner than we might have thought,” said Dave Clark, president of Live Nation Michigan. “There’s light at the end of the tunnel now.”
As things stand under Michigan’s six-stage Safe Start Plan, which was established during the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, large events and gatherings are banned until Phase 6 – meaning when a vaccine is available or community spread has zeroed out.
The entertainment committee is urging the governor to move big gatherings up into Phase 5, where events could take place under an extensive set of health guidelines and attendance restrictions. Most of the state, including metro Detroit, is now in Phase 4, with parts of northern Michigan entering Phase 5 this week.
“Everybody is trying to move the needle,” said Jon Witz, a veteran festival producer whose events include Arts, Beats & Eats and Winter Blast. “To say we need a cure or vaccine before you can put on an event is a really strong statement when there are so many other businesses that can already operate.”
Notably, Witz and company are asking Whitmer to ditch the strict capacity counts that have been intrinsic to the reopening process – the staggered maximums of “10 persons,” “100 persons” and so on, which have guided the thinking since March.
Instead, event producers seek crowd flexibility based on their physical footprints. Attendance caps, they argue, should be dictated by square footage or acreage.
Specifically, their recommendations call for 50% capacity at outdoor venues without fixed seating; 25% outdoors with fixed seating; 40% indoors without fixed seating; and 20% indoors with fixed seating.
“If I have a 20-acre festival site, why should I be limited to 500 attendees?” said Witz.
Moreover, event producers argue they’re able to enforce social distancing more effectively than many of the businesses now back up and running: Festivals and concerts are already required to enlist security personnel, and police are usually on-site.
The recommendations submitted to the state Monday also include sanitation and health protocols, outlining social-distancing measures at performance areas and other points of congestion, such as ticket windows, concessions stands and restrooms. The guidelines would be subject to ongoing 30-day review.
The plans entail “radical changes to the way we would operate,” Witz said. In the case of Arts, Beats & Eats in early September, that might mean fewer vendors, new foot-traffic patterns and the elimination of the national stage, where thousands typically congregate for the fest’s headlining bands.
Dave Lorenz, vice president of Pure Michigan, said the proposals will be vetted by state health and labor officials, then forwarded to Whitmer for consideration.
“These are such well thought-out plans, I think the administration would be able to certify them relatively rapidly,” Lorenz said.
